Lookalike Audiences vs Advantage+ Targeting for Shopify Stores
META TITLE: Lookalike Audience vs Advantage+ Targeting on Meta
META DESCRIPTION: What a lookalike audience does now that Advantage+ lookalike is on by default, how to turn Advantage+ audience off, and when to leave it on.
SLUG: lookalike-audiences
TAGS: lookalike audience, facebook lookalike audiences, advantage plus, meta ads, custom audience, seed audience, shopify ads
A lookalike audience reaches new people who resemble your existing customers. Meta defines it as a way to "reach new people who are likely to be interested in your business." Those people "share similar characteristics to your existing customers."
The comparison with Advantage+ targeting is no longer a clean either-or choice. Meta states that Advantage+ lookalike is "automatically enabled for new, duplicated and draft campaigns and ad sets."
That covers lookalikes built from mobile, website or customer list custom audiences. So your lookalike is a suggestion by default, not a boundary. You get a hard lookalike only by unchecking a box, and Meta says that may take Advantage+ off.
What Is a Lookalike Audience on Facebook?
Here is the plain answer to what is a lookalike audience on facebook. You give Meta a list of people, and Meta finds more people like them.
Meta's Marketing API documentation says lookalikes "take several sets of people as 'seeds'." The consumer Help Center calls the same thing a source audience. So seed audience is the developer term, not the Ads Manager label.
Most Facebook lookalike audiences start from a custom audience, though Meta also builds them from Page fans or from campaign and ad set conversions. For a Shopify store the custom audience route is the practical one, usually a customer list or a purchaser audience.
Meta's requirements are specific. You need "a source with at least 100 people." Meta adds that it "generally recommends a source audience that has between 1,000-5,000 people." You can create "up to 500 lookalike audiences from a single source." And "people in your source audience are excluded from your lookalike audience."
What Percentage Should a Lookalike Audience Be?
The percentage slider is the only lever you get. "Smaller percentages more closely match your source audience, but larger percentages create a bigger, broader audience."
Meta's lookalike sets page publishes three bands: "the most similar audience (0%-1%)," "the second most similar audience (1%-3%)," and "the least similar audience (3%-6%)." Those sets are "non-overlapping," so you do not exclude one from another.
The full range lives in the Marketing API documentation. It is "0.01-0.20 incremented by 0.01," described as the "top x% of original audience in a selected country." That is 1% to 20%, not the 1% to 10% figure that circulates on marketing blogs.
Meta's pages disagree here, so treat this one carefully. Meta says you no longer choose a location when creating a lookalike. Meta's lookalike sets page still instructs you to "Choose a source and country for your audience." The Marketing API still marks country as required. So the change may not have reached every surface.
Meta also says "new lookalikes won't show an estimated audience size in Audience Manager." The estimate appears only once the lookalike is used in an ad set. So stop hunting for lookalike audience size in Audience Manager.
Seed quality beats seed size. Meta's wording: use "an audience made from your best customers rather than one that includes all your customers."
Is Advantage+ Lookalike On by Default?
Yes. By default, your lookalike does not limit who sees your ads.
Advantage+ audience is Meta's AI-chosen audience layer, defined in full in our Meta Advantage+ guide. Meta states that Advantage+ lookalike is "automatically enabled for new, duplicated and draft campaigns and ad sets."
Meta writes that Advantage+ lookalike lets its system "deliver ads to people outside your defined lookalike audience if it's likely to improve performance." Meta says it "may expand your audience further to include similar opportunities" when it sees better performance beyond your selection.
That makes the 1% versus 5% debate mostly theoretical. Unless you set the lookalike as an audience control, the percentage you picked is a starting point.
Meta illustrates this with gender. "If you suggest the gender Women, it's possible that your ads could also deliver to men if Meta's AI finds them likely to respond." Suggestions steer. They do not restrict. Audience controls bind. Meta lists them as "Locations, Minimum age, Custom audiences to exclude and Languages."

How to Turn Off Advantage+ Audience for a Lookalike
The same audience behaves two ways depending on one checkbox.
Select "Further limit your audience" or "Further limit the reach of your ads." That opens the additional audience controls: age, gender, custom audiences and detailed targeting. Custom audiences is where "you can include custom audiences and lookalike audiences."
Meta warns that you "may have to uncheck the Use as a suggestion boxes."
Meta also states the cost. "If you uncheck the box to remove suggestions, you may no longer be using Advantage+ audience. The Audience section will show Advantage+ off." Use the controls "if reaching a specific audience is more important than getting best performance."
Two changes do not cost you Advantage+. Meta confirms you "can raise the minimum age up to 25 or exclude a custom audience without turning Advantage+ off." The full on and off picture sits in our Advantage+ campaign guide.
Why You Cannot Exclude a Lookalike Audience Under Advantage+ Audience
Meta is blunt. "It's not possible to exclude lookalike audiences using Advantage+ audience because exclusion constrains your audience and reduces your delivery opportunities."
Custom audience exclusions still work. Meta gives the prospecting example itself: "Exclude these custom audiences: For example, to exclude current customers." Meta says excluded custom audiences "can still be added as Audience suggestions, such as in a prospecting campaign."
So if your plan depends on excluding a lookalike, Advantage+ audience cannot run it.
How to Build a Seed Audience From Your Shopify Customer List
Meta wants 1,000 to 5,000 people, and Shopify's own export is the fastest way there.
Shopify's documentation lists four export options: "Current page," "All customers," "Selected customer," and "# customers matching your filters to export a customer segment." That fourth option is the one you want.
Exports of up to 50 customers download in your browser, and larger exports are emailed to you. "Exported CSV files are limited to 15 MB in size."
Segment before you export. Repeat purchasers make a better seed than your full list. Work out who counts as high value with our CAC calculator and break-even ROAS calculator.
Which Lookalike Audiences Are Restricted or Blocked
Some categories cannot use lookalike audience targeting at all. Meta states that lookalikes "are limited or unavailable for some ads about financial products and services, employment or housing opportunities."
Age is a hard block. Meta says you "can't use detailed targeting, custom audiences, Lookalike Audiences or saved audiences" for audiences that include people under 18.
Seed content is screened too. Meta's developer documentation flags a change from 2 September 2025. Meta began rolling out "more proactive restrictions on custom audiences that may suggest information not permitted under our terms."
It names health conditions such as "arthritis" or "diabetes," and financial status such as "credit score." Those audiences will be "flagged and prevented from being used to run ad campaigns."
What Meta's Performance Claim Means for a Lookalike
Meta writes that the Sales and App promotion objectives "could get 7.2% lower cost per result" with Advantage+ audience. That is a vendor claim, and "could" is Meta's own hedge word.
Meta's other objective figures and the wider set of Advantage+ claims are broken down in our Meta Advantage+ guide. Test the claim against your own numbers. Our guides to Shopify ad benchmarks and MER cover what to measure.
When to Use a Lookalike Audience as a Control vs a Suggestion
Use it as a control when the audience matters more than the cost per result. Retargeting is the clearest case. Meta's own A/B testing recommendation for Advantage+ audience covers "almost all campaign types, except retargeting campaigns." That is the one place Meta stops short of pointing you at it.
Leave it as a suggestion for prospecting, where you can still exclude existing customers as a custom audience. That keeps Advantage+ on while stopping your prospecting budget chasing buyers you already own.
Change one thing at a time. Creative fatigue moves cost per result too, as our creative fatigue guide explains.
Does Agency AI Support Lookalike Audiences?
Agency AI does not build, size or optimise lookalike audiences. Its Meta ad builder offers two audience options. New Customers reaches "people who haven't purchased from you before." Remarketing targets "previous visitors and customers."
Agency AI adds one audience guardrail. It "will display a performance tip recommending no more than 2 remarketing ads live at a time." Focused remarketing "prevents audience overlap and ensures optimal delivery."
On optimisation, Agency AI analyses "the last 7 days of your account data and posts optimization recommendations." Its documentation states that "nothing changes in your ad accounts until you act." For Meta, Agency AI "tells you what to change and you apply it on the Campaigns page." For the wider picture, see automating Facebook ads for Shopify and how to lower Shopify CAC.
Agency AI is listed on the Shopify App Store at $59 per month, or $492 per year for a 31% saving. It offers a 30-day free trial. The app launched on 27 October 2025 and holds a 5.0 rating from 5 reviews.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sources
Every figure here comes from Meta's or Shopify's own documentation. Four items come from Meta's Business Help Center page on lookalike audiences. Those are the definition, the percentage slider behaviour, the best-customers seed advice, and the financial, employment and housing restrictions. Meta's lookalike audience requirements page carries the seed rules. Those are the 100-person minimum, the 1,000 to 5,000 recommendation, the 500-lookalikes-per-source limit and the automatic exclusion of the source audience. The same page carries the removal of location selection at creation and the missing audience size in Audience Manager. It is also the source for the up to 3 days populating time. The 0%-1%, 1%-3% and 3%-6% bands and the non-overlapping confirmation are from Meta's lookalike sets page. That same page conflicts with the location note, since it still tells you to choose a source and country. Meta's Marketing API documentation for lookalike audiences carries the true 0.01 to 0.20 percentage range, the seeds terminology and the 3-day refresh. It also carries the 1 to 6 hour populate time and the September 2025 restrictions on health and financial audience names. The three seed audience types are from the same Marketing API page. That page also marks country as required for a lookalike, which conflicts with the no-location note. Meta's two pages also disagree on populating time. Both conflicts are named rather than reconciled. Three statements come from Meta's Advantage+ lookalike page. They are that Advantage+ lookalike is on by default, that Meta may deliver outside it, and that Meta may expand past the chosen percentage. The 7.2% cost-per-result figure and the retargeting exception are from Meta's Advantage+ audience page. That figure is a vendor claim. It carries Meta's own hedge, could get. Meta publishes no sample size, date range, region or confidence level for it. Meta's Advantage+ audience setup page carries the audience control steps and the use as a suggestion unchecking. It also carries the ban on excluding lookalike audiences and the custom audience exclusion example. The gender illustration and the list of binding audience controls are from Meta's audience suggestions and controls page. The Advantage+ off consequence is from Meta's page on Advantage+ campaign settings. The minimum age 25 carve-out and the usually shows Advantage+ off wording are from Meta's page on when Advantage+ shows on or off. The under-18 restriction is from Meta's Advantage+ custom audience page. The customer export options, the 50-customer browser download threshold and the 15 MB file cap are from Shopify's customer import and export documentation. Agency AI's New Customers and Remarketing options and the 2-remarketing-ad tip are from Agency AI's own knowledge base. The 7-day analysis window and the approval rule come from the same knowledge base. Pricing, the annual saving, the trial and the launch date are from the Agency AI Shopify App Store listing. The rating is from the same listing, checked on 25 August 2026.
