Meta Advantage Plus Explained: What It Is and What It Automates

Meta Advantage Plus, written Advantage+ by Meta, is Meta's brand for AI automation in Ads Manager. It comes as whole campaign products and as single features. Meta's deepest optimizations run only when audience, placement and budget are all on Advantage+. Narrow any of those three too far and the label switches off.

What Is Meta Advantage Plus?

Advantage+ is not one product. It is a family of automations.

Meta's Business Help Center calls Advantage+ sales campaigns "the most efficient way for advertisers using the sales objective to drive online sales." Meta adds that its "most advanced AI optimizations are enabled" when a campaign uses Advantage+ audience, placement and budget.

It is also the default now. Meta says most campaigns start in "the recommended setup, or Advantage+ campaign setup." Manual has not gone anywhere: "Manual campaign features are all still available."

What Happened to Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns?

Meta renamed it. The notice on Meta's own product page reads: "we have updated and renamed Advantage+ shopping to Advantage+ sales campaigns."

The rename is not finished. That page still sits at the advantage-plus-shopping-ads URL. Its heading and campaign button still say Advantage+ shopping campaign, while the banner says Advantage+ sales campaigns.

Both names are live. Treat sales campaigns as current. Expect advantage+ shopping campaigns in menus and older guides.

What Does Advantage+ Automate?

Meta sorts Advantage+ into two shapes. End-to-end campaign solutions apply AI "across your campaign," for sales, app promotion and leads objectives. Single-step automations are individual features "to address specific campaign needs in Ads Manager."

ShapeAutomation GroupFeatures Meta Lists
End-to-end campaignWhole campaignAdvantage+ sales campaigns, Advantage+ app campaigns, Advantage+ leads campaigns

Single-stepDestination automationAdvantage+ destination

An end-to-end campaign switches several single-step levers on together. Any lever can also run inside a manual campaign.

What Are Advantage+ Preset Settings?

Some settings lock once automation is on. Meta's setup step says it plainly: "some campaign settings are preset. You can see those settings by clicking See all preset settings." One exception: "Audience controls and placement controls... can be set at the ad account level."

We will not list which fields are preset. That list opens in a modal inside the Ads Manager campaign builder, and Meta publishes it nowhere else. Several blogs do publish one, and at least one contradicts Meta's own page.

A related control is public. Step 5 shows an optional existing customer budget cap, which shares budget "between new and existing customers." One Meta stat below depends on leaving it unset. Our guide to automating Facebook ads for a Shopify store covers these defaults.

What Turns Advantage+ On and Off?

Advantage+ is a state on each section, not a permanent campaign type.

Meta's wording: "If you narrow your Budget, Audience or Placements too far, you will see Advantage+ off on that section." The campaign then "will not benefit from all the AI optimizations."

Meta does not publish the threshold. It publishes the consequence.

Account-level limits behave differently: they "will not affect your campaign's Advantage+ state." Meta's examples are an age floor and countries you cannot ship to.

Off is not a failure state. A campaign can "still benefit if you choose the broadest settings possible," per Meta. Widen the lever and the label returns.

Advantage+ Audience vs Advantage+ Creative

These two get mixed up constantly.

What Is Advantage+ Audience?

Meta's definition: Advantage+ audience "lets advertisers use Meta's advanced AI to find their Meta ad campaign audience."

The inputs are named. Meta lists past conversions, Meta Pixel data, and interactions with previous ads.

Meta publishes claimed gains by objective, with no methodology attached. Awareness "could get 14.8% lower cost per result." Traffic, Engagement and Leads sit at 9.7%. Sales and App promotion sit at 7.2%.

Meta recommends A/B testing it for almost all campaign types, except retargeting campaigns.

What Is Advantage+ Creative?

This lever touches assets, not targeting. Meta says your "images and videos are optimized to versions your audience is more likely to interact with."

Availability depends on ad format, placements and catalog use. Some enhancements are on by default and can be switched off.

Named enhancements include image generation, background generation, text generation, image touch-ups, translations and video subtitles. Meta labels many of them AI.

Ads edited with those features "may include AI info on the About this ad screen." Meta's supplemental terms for them launched on May 6, 2024.

What Results Does Meta Claim for Advantage+?

Every figure below is Meta's number about Meta's own product. Read them as vendor claims.

Meta’s ClaimMetricScope Meta Publishes
“$4.52 average return on ad spend” with Advantage+ shopping campaigns AI-driven targeting, and “22% higher return than those who don’t”ROASFootnote marker only, no methodology on the page
“19% cost per action improvement by adding Advantage+ shopping campaigns to business-as-usual”Cost per actionMeta states it was seen in A/B tests in Southeast Asia
“5% lower cost per purchase when running Advantage+ shopping campaigns with no existing customer budget cap”Cost per purchaseFootnote marker only, no methodology on the page
“9% improvement in cost per conversion, on average”Cost per conversionNo footnote, sample size or date range published

The footnote markers have nothing behind them: no sample size, no date range, no region. The 19% figure is the exception, and it states its own scope: Southeast Asia A/B tests, not a global result.

Watch out. An older Meta rollout page still shows "17% average improvement in cost per acquisition" and "32% average increase in return on ad spend". Both are dated and superseded, and they measure different things. A 32% ROAS increase is not a 32% CPA cut.

What Advantage+ Does Not Do

Advantage+ stops at Meta's edge. Nothing in its documentation touches Google Ads. Run both platforms and it optimizes half your spend, blind to the rest.

Creative automation starts from what you upload: Meta's wording is about optimizing "your images and videos." The offer stays your decision.

It has no view of your economics either. It optimizes toward the objective and budget you set, not your gross margin. Our break-even ROAS calculator works that number out from AOV, COGS, shipping and fees.

One more: narrowing a lever flips a section off quietly, so the state needs checking.

Do You Need a Tool on Top of Advantage+?

Some tools do not replace Advantage+. They drive it.

Shopify's Campaign Autopilot is the clearest case. Shopify's own docs say "Autopilot recommends Meta Advantage+ campaigns," each shown as a tactic "until you approve or dismiss it." Approve one and "Autopilot creates the live campaign on Meta." Shopify also calls the feature "in early access," open "only to certain merchants." Our Campaign Autopilot comparison covers it in full.

Autopilot also adds guardrails, including a "target return on ad spend."

Agency AI sits in that layer with two differences. It monitors Meta and Google together. And it measures every recommendation against your break-even ROAS, with the evidence attached: spend, ROAS, CPA, CTR and conversions.

The second difference is control. Its knowledge base is blunt: "Agency AI does not push optimization changes into Meta on your behalf." Google recommendations carry an Apply button. Meta changes stay yours to make.

Advantage+ acts the moment you switch it on. A layer above it should hand you that decision.

Final Thoughts

Meta Advantage Plus is a switch with conditions, not a magic setting. Turn it on and Meta runs audience, placement and budget. Narrow one and part of it turns itself off, quietly.

Meta's own numbers are the strongest case for using it, and they are Meta's numbers. Check the scope, then judge the campaign against your own break-even.

The gap it leaves sits outside Meta: your Google spend and your margins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Advantage+ shopping the same as Advantage+ sales campaigns?
Yes, same product under a new name. Meta says it "renamed Advantage+ shopping to Advantage+ sales campaigns." Parts of its own site still show the old one.
Why does my campaign say Advantage+ off?
One of three settings is too narrow. Meta states that narrowing Budget, Audience or Placements too far turns Advantage+ off on that section. Account controls do not.
What is the difference between Advantage Plus audience and Advantage Plus creative?
Advantage+ audience finds who sees the ad, using past conversions, Meta Pixel data and previous ad interactions. Advantage+ creative changes the assets, with enhancements such as image generation and video subtitles.
Should you turn off Meta Advantage+?
Meta treats off as reduced automation, not a blocked campaign. Switching it off makes sense for a constraint the automation keeps overriding. Retargeting is one: Meta does not recommend Advantage+ audience there.
Does Advantage+ work with Google Ads?
No. Advantage+ is Meta automation, and Meta's documentation covers Meta campaigns only. Running both as one funnel needs a layer above them.
