Meta Andromeda Explained: What It Means for Your Shopify Ads
META TITLE: Meta Andromeda Explained: What It Means for Shopify Ads
META DESCRIPTION: Meta Andromeda is the retrieval system that shortlists which ads can reach each person. How it works, what Meta reports, and how to adjust your creative.

Meta Andromeda is the machine learning system Meta uses at the first step of choosing which ads a person might see. Its engineers describe it as a system design "for retrieval in ad recommendation." It narrows tens of millions of candidate ads down to a few thousand.
For a Shopify store, that changes what good creative looks like. Current guidance from Meta favours distinct creative concepts over small variations of one ad.
This guide covers what Andromeda does and what Meta has published about its results. It also covers how to adjust your campaigns and creative, with every figure attributed to its source.
What Is Meta Andromeda?
Engineering at Meta introduced it on December 2, 2024. Its post calls Andromeda "Meta's proprietary machine learning (ML) system design for retrieval in ad recommendation."
Andromeda does not decide the final ad on its own. It builds the shortlist that later stages of Meta's system choose from.
Retrieval, the First Step in Ad Delivery
Ad delivery at Meta runs in stages. "Retrieval is the first step in our multi-stage ads recommendation system," the engineering post says. That stage "is tasked with selecting ads from tens of millions of ad candidates into a few thousand relevant ad candidates."
An ad that misses the shortlist for a given person never reaches the later stages for that impression. Retrieval is where creative relevance starts to matter.
What Changed Under the Hood
Retrieval was rebuilt around far larger models. The post cites "a meaningful increase of model capacity (10,000x) for enhanced personalization."
That capacity runs on the NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchip and Meta's own Training and Inference Accelerator, known as MTIA. You never touch any of it, but it explains why Meta can now weigh far more creatives per person.
What Meta Says Andromeda Changed
Every figure in this section is Meta's own reporting about its own system. Treat each as a vendor claim, not an independent measurement.
Recall and Ad Quality
Meta reports that Andromeda's deployment "across Instagram and Facebook applications has achieved +6% recall improvement to the retrieval system." That delivered "+8% ads quality improvement on selected segments."
Note the limits in that wording. "Selected segments" means the 8% does not describe every advertiser, and "ads quality" is Meta's internal measure rather than your ROAS.
Why Creative Volume Matters Now
Andromeda was built expecting a flood of creative. The engineering post says generative AI tools mean "the number of ads creatives in Meta's recommendation systems is expected to grow significantly."
Advantage+ adds to that pressure. Meta says it "automates budget allocation, audience targeting, and bid adjustments," boosting performance "through more ads in the system." Our explainer on Meta Advantage Plus covers what each Advantage+ product automates.
Meta Andromeda and GEM
GEM is a separate system that often comes up alongside Andromeda. Meta calls the Generative Ads Recommendation Model its "most advanced ads foundation model, built on an LLM-inspired paradigm."
A November 10, 2025 engineering post reported the results of GEM's launch. It "delivered a 5% increase in ad conversions on Instagram and a 3% increase in ad conversions on Facebook Feed in Q2." Andromeda builds the shortlist, while GEM is a foundation model that passes what it learns to other models across Meta's ads system.

Creative Diversification, Meta's Answer to Andromeda
Advice for the Andromeda era has a name. In December 2025 it defined creative diversification as "the creation of distinct campaign assets tailored to different personas or use cases."
Distinct is the key word. Meta asks for ads that are "truly different in look, feel, storyline, and message," not minor tweaks of one winner.
Its own example draws the line clearly. Iteration produces "two ads with identical visuals, but different text CTAs." Diversification produces "a Reels ad tailored for GenZ and a separate partnership ad featuring a creator."
An April 2025 Meta for Business post quotes one advertiser on the volume this takes. Dribbleup said it "maintained steady performance while ramping from 3-4 new creatives a week to almost 50 on average."
How to Use Meta Andromeda for a Shopify Store
You cannot switch Andromeda on or off. What you control is the creative and structure it has to work with.
Build Concepts, Not Variations
Start from reasons to buy rather than from one ad. For a single bestseller, that could mean a product demo, a customer review, a problem and solution story, and a bundle offer.
Change the format and hook along with the message. Swapping only the headline on the same image is the iteration Meta describes, and it gives retrieval little new to work with.
Give the System Room to Choose
Meta's April 2025 guidance tells advertisers to upload "multiple creatives with different themes and messages." It also points to Advantage+ sales campaigns for testing "an unprecedented scale of ad variations."
Splitting a handful of creatives across many tiny ad sets works against that. Fewer ad sets holding more distinct concepts give Meta's system a wider choice for each person.
Watch Fatigue Across Concepts
More concepts do not end fatigue, they spread it out. Track frequency and cost per purchase per concept, and retire tired angles before the whole ad set slides. Our guide to creative fatigue covers the warning signs.
Keep Conversion Tracking Clean
Andromeda changes which ads get considered, but delivery still optimizes toward the conversion events you send. Missing or duplicated purchase events weaken that signal for every concept at once. Our guide to the Meta Conversions API covers server-side tracking for Shopify.
Judge Results Against Your Own Numbers
Every published figure is an average across Meta's advertisers. Your test is whether diversified creative lowers your own cost per purchase below break-even, which our break-even ROAS calculator works out.
Where Agency AI Fits
Diversification is mostly a production problem, and that is the gap Agency AI's tools target. Its AI Design Studio generates 8 concepts per render in Story and Square sizes, with reusable style presets.
Copy comes from a 12-angle selector, so one product can carry several distinct messages. The company says a full Meta ad takes about two to three minutes to build, against ten or more in Ads Manager.
Through the Claude and ChatGPT connector, the same work can start in a chat. Each new ad is proposed first and runs only once you confirm it. Our guide to automating Facebook ads for Shopify compares the wider options.
Final Thoughts
Meta Andromeda rewards stores that give it genuinely different creative to choose from. Build a small portfolio of distinct concepts, keep the structure simple enough for the system to test them, and measure each against your own break-even.
Published gains are real claims from a vendor with an interest in them. Your own account data decides whether they hold for your store.
